CAPE WINELANDS AIRPORT EXPANSION ENTERS CRUCIAL EIA PHASE

The expansion of Cape Winelands Airport has reached a major milestone, with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) accepting the final Scoping Report and Plan of Study. This approval advances the project to the Impact Assessment Phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), crucial for ensuring the airport’s future development aligns with environmental and regulatory standards.

Located approximately 13 km northeast of Durbanville, and 25 km from Cape Town International Airport, Cape Winelands Airport has been operational for over 80 years, primarily serving the general aviation sector. The expansion will transform the airport into a modern, sustainable facility with an extended runway, improved airside infrastructure, and a boutique terminal featuring advanced technology and passenger amenities.

According to Cape Winelands Airport spokesperson Deidre Davids, the acceptance of the Scoping Report signifies the airport’s commitment to sustainable development. “The EIA is a crucial piece of the puzzle,” Davids said, highlighting that the detailed Impact Phase will involve over 17 specialist studies, assessing factors like noise, socio-economic impacts, and climate considerations.

The expansion will provide strategic benefits, positioning Cape Winelands Airport as an alternate airport for reserve fuel planning. This not only leads to cost savings for airlines but also reduces fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, being only 25 km from Cape Town International Airport, it offers convenience for passengers in case of diversions.

Stakeholder engagement has been a key focus, with input from Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) influencing the final Scoping Report. Those interested in joining the stakeholder process can register via the independent environmental practitioners, PHS Consulting.

As Cape Winelands Airport moves forward with this transformative project, it is poised to make a significant contribution to both the local aviation sector and the broader environmental sustainability goals.
