Malawi will, in the coming months, see the launch of a new tourism-specific airline providing connections between attractions in the country’s northern region and Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.
Rayoni Holdings, a local tourism, aviation and hospitality company, was granted an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Malawi Civil Aviation Authority in June, which allows it to operate scheduled, unscheduled and charter flights under the Rayoni Tourism Airline brand.
The AOC expands the scope of the company’s operations, which include tours to Karonga, Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Likoma Island, Nyika National Park and Livingstonia. The new airline will also provide links between Malawi, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro, through an agreement with Ethiopian Airlines.
Rayoni Holdings Public Relations Manager Alex Ngulube said that the company was now finalising procedures for the launch of its inaugural flights, expected in the coming months.
“The airline will operate a modern fleet of aircraft, with a focus on providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers,” Ngulube said.
“Rayoni Holdings Limited is committed to contributing to the growth and development of the aviation industry in Malawi, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. The company is also dedicated to promoting tourism in Malawi, showcasing the beauty of the northern region and its rich cultural heritage,” Ngulube added.
Malawi’s Ministry of Tourism welcomed the award, stating on social media that the development represented a “significant step forward for Malawi tourism, addressing some of the challenges faced by tourists in reaching and exploring our beautiful destination.”
“We extend our congratulations to Rayoni Holdings Limited, and we look forward to a collaborative effort in promoting Malawi as a tourist destination,” the Ministry added.
According to a statement by Rayoni Holdings, the AOC grants Rayoni Tourism Airline the authority to operate scheduled, unscheduled, and charter flights within Malawi and beyond. The airline aims to bolster tourism in Malawi, particularly in the northern region, leveraging its status as the wholly-owned investment company of Mughona Trust, a family trust.
The startup airline intends to offer comprehensive tour packages covering destinations in Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania, supported by its partnership with Ethiopian Airlines Group for global marketing and transportation services.
Apart from its aviation endeavors, Rayoni Holdings is actively involved in other tourism investments in Malawi, including an international convention center and a hotel. The company’s integrated approach aims to enhance tourism infrastructure and services across the region.
In a separate announcement, Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works confirmed the certification of Rayoni Holdings Limited and Flytech Aviation Group, paving the way for their charter and scheduled flight operations. This regulatory milestone underscores Malawi’s commitment to enhancing its aviation sector and fostering regional cooperation in air traffic management and rescue services.
