WHISPER AERO AND ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS PARTNER TO ENABLE POWERTRAINS FOR REGIONAL AIR MOBILITY

Whisper Aero Inc. and Electric Power Systems (EPS) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at advancing regional air mobility at scale. The collaboration will combine Whisper’s next-generation thrusters, known for their cleaner, quieter, and more efficient design, with EPS’s EPiC™ Energy and EPiC Power batteries to create certifiable powertrains for Part 23 aircraft. This partnership marks a significant step toward enabling sustainable, hybrid-electric flight in the near term.

Whisper Aero has made breakthroughs in high blade count electric ducted fans, which offer significantly lower noise levels, higher performance, and improved safety compared to traditional propulsion systems. These innovations are driven by advancements in electric motors that decouple power and thrust, allowing Whisper to optimize efficiency for higher speed flight at lower fan pressure ratios. Recent tests of Whisper’s larger 80 lbf thrust propulsor prototypes have demonstrated these capabilities, leading the company to seek ideal powertrain partners like EPS.

EPS has a strong track record in aviation-grade batteries, including its work on NASA’s X-57 Maxwell demonstrator and the EPiC 1.0 battery system, which powers aircraft like the Diamond eDA40. EPS is now working toward obtaining an STC for its battery packs through collaborations with EASA and the FAA. Their EPiC 2.0, a more powerful version that offers 50% more airtime on a single charge, will play a key role in the partnership with Whisper Aero.

Both companies are now working on a retrofit Part 23 aircraft concept that integrates Whisper’s 80 lbf eQ250 propulsors, Whisper’s JetFoil™ integration, and EPS’s EPiC energy storage systems. Initial compatibility tests have been completed, and a demonstration of the combined system will take place at UP.SUMMIT 2024. Looking ahead, Whisper and EPS plan to expand their efforts with larger arrays of propulsors and batteries combined with a high-voltage bus and turbogenerator to create a hybrid-electric demonstrator.

This partnership also aligns with Whisper’s ReConnecTN coalition, which is focused on advancing regional air mobility in Tennessee. The goal is to develop affordable and sustainable flight solutions, ultimately benefiting both commercial and defense sectors.
