Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s fastest-growing airline, continues to strengthen its global presence with the addition of new international destinations. Recognised for its exceptional service and operational success, the airline has consistently expanded its reach over the years. Operating for over 70 years, Ethiopian Airlines has earned a reputation as one of Africa’s leading carriers, offering seamless travel experiences and winning numerous international awards.
Currently, Ethiopian Airlines flies to 139 cities worldwide and remains committed to expanding its global footprint. Using Addis Ababa as a central hub, the airline has steadily added new destinations every year. In a recent announcement, Group CEO Mesfin Tasew outlined plans to add five new international destinations during the 2024 fiscal year. These include Amsterdam (Netherlands), Monrovia (Liberia), Port Sudan, Dhaka (Bangladesh), and others. This strategic move is part of the airline’s broader goal to reach 207 destinations by 2035.
The expansion is not only focused on connecting more cities but also on enhancing regional socio-economic development. By fostering trade, tourism, and travel between Africa and the world, Ethiopian Airlines is playing a critical role in promoting growth and partnerships. Additionally, the airline is preparing to launch flights to Australia within the next two years—a significant milestone, as it has never operated in this market before.
With a fleet of 147 aircraft, serving 139 international and 22 domestic destinations, Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand both its network and its fleet. The airline is exploring leasing options to support its ambitious growth, ensuring that it can offer comprehensive travel services to a growing customer base. By 2035, Ethiopian Airlines aims to generate $25 billion in revenue, transporting 67 million passengers annually.
Beyond expanding its flight network, Ethiopian Airlines is also investing heavily in infrastructure. The airline has partnered with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants and Zaha Hadid Architects to design and develop a new Mega Airport City in Bishoftu, located just 40 km from Addis Ababa. Once completed, the new airport is expected to handle 110 million passengers annually—four times the current capacity at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. This ambitious project is set to elevate aviation standards in Africa and boost the region’s air travel infrastructure.
Founded in 1945, Ethiopian Airlines has played a crucial role in the Ethiopian economy by creating jobs and contributing to tourism and trade. As it continues to expand and innovate, the airline remains a key driver of the continent’s connectivity and development.
