The aviation industry is taking a significant step toward sustainability with a new partnership between AvFlight and Avfuel Corporation, marking a milestone in the availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The announcement, made in September and reported by Renewable Energy Magazine, revealed that AvFlight’s Falcon Field location in Mesa, Arizona, will now consistently offer Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. This collaboration marks the first of AvFlight’s 26 hubs to offer SAF, a critical move in reducing aviation’s carbon footprint.
Neste’s sustainable fuel boasts one of the highest blend ratios available in business aviation today. According to the official release, each 8,000-gallon truckload delivered to Falcon Field is expected to reduce nearly 21 tons of carbon pollution—comparable to removing 4.5 gas-powered vehicles from the road annually.
The City of Mesa, known for its outdoor attractions and over 200 parks, warmly welcomed this initiative. Given the well-documented health risks associated with aviation pollution—ranging from respiratory problems to cardiovascular issues—the city has prioritized sustainability in its Climate Action Plan. This plan promotes pollution reduction and the shift to renewable energy sources, aligning perfectly with AvFlight’s latest move.
“This is an exciting development for our community and a huge stride toward a more sustainable future,” said Corinne Nystrom, Falcon Field’s airport director. “This partnership supports Mesa’s broader goals of protecting the environment and transitioning to cleaner energy.”
AvFlight received its first delivery of sustainable fuel on August 28, 2024, at Falcon Field. The shift to SAF is a significant component of AvFlight’s overall sustainability initiatives, which aim to help the company and its clients meet ambitious environmental goals. AvFlight regional manager Aaron Mauer expressed the company’s enthusiasm, stating, “We are incredibly excited to offer SAF at our Mesa location. This addition strengthens our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and offers our customers a chance to contribute to sustainability.”
As the aviation industry continues its efforts to mitigate environmental impacts, partnerships like this one will be essential in shaping a cleaner future for air travel.
