PTDI LOOKS TO CN-235 CONVERSION FOR FUTURE PROJECTS

PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the nation’s premier aerospace manufacturer, is shifting its focus to the special-mission conversions of its CN-235 turboprop transport aircraft. This move is part of PTDI’s strategy to keep its aircraft relevant in the competitive international market.

One of the notable steps in this initiative is a newly formed strategic partnership with Greek defense technology firm, Scytalys. The partnership aims to provide CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) solutions for the Philippines, along with the potential to attract additional customers across the region. Scytalys is well-known for its MIMS Airborne mission system, used in the Hellenic Navy’s Lockheed P-3 Orions for data links and interoperability support.

Speaking at the Bali Air Show, PTDI’s Director of Commerce, Technology and Development, Mohamad Arif Faisal, confirmed the partnership with Scytalys. He stated that technical proposals and presentations have already been submitted to the Philippine Navy as part of their evolving defense program.

In August, the Philippines announced the acquisition of two Leonardo ATR 72 aircraft, equipped with an Elbit Systems payload for long-range patrol missions. While this purchase addressed immediate needs, PTDI is positioning itself for future collaborations with the Philippines, particularly in the country’s upcoming ASW program.

In another notable project, PTDI is collaborating with Turkey’s Havelsan to develop an airborne early warning (AEW) variant of the CN-235. Havelsan, with its experience from Turkey’s E-7 Peace Eagle AEW program, brings expertise in designing and integrating the Airborne Segment Mission Computing System (MCS), as well as modernizing mission interface software, weapons control, and electronic support measures.

The CN-235 platform originated from a joint venture between PTDI and Airbus Defense (previously known as CASA of Spain). Although PTDI is not currently involved in Airbus Defense’s larger and more advanced C295 project, the company remains focused on optimizing the CN-235 for future international projects.

As PTDI expands its partnerships and capabilities, its commitment to maintaining the relevance of the CN-235 in the global market is evident. The company continues to explore new special-mission variants, aiming to solidify its standing in the maritime patrol and AEW aircraft sectors.
