25 YEARS OF AVIATION COMPONENT SUPPLY WITH ARTEMIS AEROSPACE

As global component supply specialists Artemis Aerospace celebrate 25 years of supporting the aviation industry, we take a retrospective look at how the industry has evolved over the past quarter-century and the role Artemis has played in these changes.

It seems fitting that the TV series “Space: 1999,” with its futuristic vision, was set in the year Artemis Aerospace was founded by Jim and Deborah Scott. Launched from the Scotts’ spare room in 1999, the company began its journey with basic business tools like the fax machine, contrasting sharply with today’s high-tech operations in 2024.

The past 25 years have witnessed remarkable advancements in aircraft design and technology. Innovations such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, 3D printing, budget airlines, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Airbus A380, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, composite airframes, ultra long-haul flights, and sustainable aviation fuel have transformed the aviation landscape. As technology advanced, so did the need for reliable component supply to prevent Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations.

The global aircraft aftermarket parts sector is projected to grow significantly, reaching an estimated USD$47.33 billion by 2028. However, the industry faces considerable challenges in a post-pandemic world marked by political instability, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions. The pandemic led to a surge in demand that manufacturers struggled to meet, exacerbated by company closures and shipping delays. Additionally, there is a global shortage of both airline pilots and qualified aviation engineers.

Reflecting on the early days of Artemis Aerospace, Jim Scott recalls similar challenges, albeit in a different political context. Essential parts were often out of stock or awaiting production, and instant communication was a distant dream. Success depended on astute trading and foresight, with customer service taking a backseat. Artemis aimed to change this by becoming a facilitator, not just a trader.

“Service and commitment were the only things we could offer at the outset, and we have really tried to maintain the level of both,” says Jim. “We feel we’re only as good as the last time we had a successful outcome for a customer, and this industry throws up all kinds of issues daily. Communication is key, keeping in touch constantly, growing trust, and becoming part of a customer’s team so we work in partnership rather than just being a supplier. At the center of everything we do is an aircraft component, but managing the issues, and the logistics involved in its supply, is crucial.”

The Scotts’ determination to hunt for elusive aircraft parts with tenacity soon paid off. Deborah Scott reflects, “Once customers realized that we wouldn’t go to sleep at night until the part they needed was delivered, they started coming back to us.”

Airlines constantly struggle to balance component requirements with the need for expensive, managed storage areas. It’s impossible to store every potential aircraft part, and often the one needed urgently is not in stock. Additionally, aircraft that would previously have been retired are being kept in service longer, limiting the availability of their components on the market. Components are also crucial for keeping flight-training simulators operational, ensuring that pilots and cabin crew can complete their initial and recurrent training.

Artemis Aerospace offers an innovative approach to component solutions for the aviation sector. Established in 1999, the company has earned a reputation for outstanding customer service by solving problems and providing a range of realistic options that offer customers the flexibility and freedom to choose solutions that suit their timescale and budget.
